HOW TO LAND LAYERING: Here's How I Style a Summer Dress for Fall.

Updated: Jan 9, 2022

Now boarding for Fall....

James told me I look like a flight attendant in this look. I don't disagree. The temperatures in the Northeast are bouncing between the 50s and 70s, and that can only mean one thing. Helloooo Fall!

You may be mimicking the leaves, swapping your Spring/Summer pieces to your Fall/Winter ones. I'm here to tell you, contrary to popular belief, you don't have to pack up alllll your favorite warm-weather items. You can get use out of them from Nov-April.

Layering is one of my favorite ways to diversify my closet and get more wear out of my favorite pieces. One layering strategy I frequently employ: adding a white button-up under dresses and tops. Adding a layer underneath your favorite pieces will add warmth + visual interest while expanding the # of outfits you can generate from a single piece, like a slip dress. It's also totally workwear friendly.

More wears per piece? Wearing the clothes you already own? That's sustainability!

I rented this 'Yellow Plaid Dress' from Tory Burch dress on Rent the Runway.

Sure, thrifting and shopping secondhand are great ways to be a more conscious consumer, but wearing the pieces you already own is a sustainable practice that's often overlooked. It's very anti-capitalist to say "no, what I have is enough", and as I unlearn the "more is more" narrative, I enjoy using what I have to make more out of my closet. And when I feel like what I have isn't enough, I rent pieces from Rent the Runway. Renting pieces 1) boosts my creativity 2) allows me to indulge in style new pieces without purchasing pieces that will sit in my closet after only one wear.

I love thinking outside the box, and I think that's why I love layering...a little ingenuity showcases my creativity. Plus, I can make new looks out of old pieces, sending a message: "what I have is enough". I purchased this white button up in 2019, and it was a true investment in my closet. You can see all the way I've styled the top on Instagram.
